501 shrink to fit December 4, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Previous review had a complicted formula for correct"seasoning" When I was a kid, and A L L Levi's were shrink to fit we would (if not caught) put on the jeans and then soak our selves in warm water in the bathtub shrinking the jeans and at the same time turning our legs a light blue. Knowing now the risks involved I wouldn't recommend it; but I've had good results just washing them inside out and then getting a tailor to stitch creases in the legs which seems to help the twisting which continues for some time
The Professional's Advise on Washing October 27, 2006 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I had some bad experience on getting the'Shrink to Fit" to shrink properly. Here is the advise from a friend of mine who is manufacturing jeans for UK market.
1/ Remove all tags and labels. 2/ Lay the jeans flat. 3/ Roll the jeans up from the leg up to the waist, with the waist on top. 4/ Put the rolled up jeans in a pot filled with cold water. Make sure the jeans is completely submerged in water. 5/ Heat the water slowly to a boil and keeping the water temperature at the boiling point for 10 minutes. 6/ Remove. 7/ Turn the jeans inside out and wash it in the washing machine. I prefer luke warm water. 8/ Line dry or use the drier. If you use the drier, use the lower setting. This will prevent the thread to shrink differently from the fibre which will create 'wrinkes'. 9/ You may want to repeat Steps 7 and 8 until the jeans faded to the shading you want. I prefer mine in the darker shade. 10/ Wash as infrequetly as possible thereafter.
Hint. a/ If the pot you have is too small. Fold the jeans into half before rolling for the boiling procedure. b/ If the fold line of your new jeans is still there after boiling. I would suggest you dry it a bit and iron it to flatten the fold line before washing. This with prevent 'crinkle lines' of faded denim.
I hope you will enjoy this excellent pair of jeans for the years to come.

These are still made from the original indigo-dyed rigid denim manufactured Cone mills in North Carolina, and are of good quality. The trick with these is to buy a bigger size then you ordinarily would, as they shrink considerably. Especially if you want to be able to roll up the cuffs, you need to buy either 2 or 4 inches longer in the inseam, i.e. if you normally wear a 32, by a thirty-four or 36, because it will shrink almost 3 inches after a couple of washes. If you want to wear them over boots, definitely go up 4 inches. I have found that the waist shrinks about an inch and half, so if you normally buy a 36, buy 38. The other thing is that if you want to avoid whitish streaking down the leg, turn them inside out when you wash them. To avoid spotting from the starch used in new shrink-to-fit fabric, wash then in hot water the first few time. Basically they will shrink through the first three washes and and pretty much stay where they are. After that, when you get them to the color you want, wash them as infrequently as possible and they will get a nice natural fading, which will look much better than any of the "hand finished" jeans they charge so much for nowadays. It will always look better if you do it yourself through natural wear.
