Pretty Weak for a Columbia Product September 21, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had a pair of these that went for a good 3 years and finally blew out the rear seam. Given their almost daily workout, their failure after that time was no big deal, and an opportunity to buy two new pair of what I thought were good shorts.
The old pair had one flaw I had noticed right away: the heavy-duty web belt does not go all the way around, and not nearly far enough into the elastic waistband. The belt is a two-piece construction, a thick web on each of the ends in the front/visible area, for about 8" on each end, which is sewn to the internal elastic waistband, which then forms the bulk of the belt around the rest of the short. The elastic waistband portion of the belt is supposed to remain inside the short, kept there on both ends with some lightweight stitching to the short itself. But, when you cinch the shorts down to keep them on as you're carrying your wallet, keys, phone, a pocket knife and other gear--especially if you're camping--the weak stitching of the elastic portion of the belt to the short blows out and the lightweight elastic portion of the belt comes right out of the interior of the waistband, and you end up cinching past the web belt and down into the non-heavy-duty elastic portion of the belt. This is unsightly, to say the least, and it also does not serve to really keep these shorts up. That, and the elastic portion of the belt now wears way too quickly, as it's not intended to take this kind of use.
Unfortunately, I had this exact same problem with both of the new pair I bought. Upon first wear--I promise that I was not trying to induce this problem--all I did was cinch the waistband down, and out popped the shockingly poorly secured portion of the elastic waistband.
My recommendation to Columbia is to run the web belt much farther around the waistband--or all the way around, maybe--so that when a wearer goes to tighten down his belt to keep his loaded-up shorts on, which you have to figure is kind of the point of these shorts, given that they've got five external and one internal pocket, that the belt actually does tighten up.
Every other feature of these shorts is quite good, the mesh lining, the pockets, the color, no problems or complaints.
But for a Columbia product, with their ads showing the comprehensive, brutal testing their items are put through, this seems to be an amazingly bad design oversight, and one I'm surprised wasn't discovered on product testing and quality control.
I'll have to pass on buying a pair of these next time.
