Product Description This parka is based on the model Eddie Bauer created for Jim Whittaker when he became the first American to summit Mount Everest in 1963. Tested to -50degreesF, this 700-fill-power premium Northern European goose down parka is the coldest weather parka we make. See why our down is the bestTHE WORLD'S BEST DOWN | Customer Reviews:
For $169.00, pretty good...but... January 8, 2009 I am an avid outdoorsman and love to hike to the tops of the highest peaks in New York in the middle of winter and this parka for that application won't cut it. It's a nice coat for traipsing around in cold weather around town, but if you think you're getting a serious piece of technical outdoor clothing, you're wrong. You get what you pay for, that's why a great parka costs big bucks, enter Mountain Hardwear Absolute Zero, Feathered Friends Rock and Ice, and even TNF Himalayan. I thought I might be getting a steal here...I was mistaken. It's going back.
Warm, warm, warm December 13, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This order was not without rough spots, but the results have been worth it. Somewhere between Amazon and Eddie Bauer, my order got delayed for about a week and a half. It did finally go through though. Unfortunately, while I typically wear large jackets from other vendors, the large Eddie Bauer parka was way too big. So back it went, along with an order for a medium. I should note that the folks at Eddie Bauer were extremely helpful during this process, and Amazon did their normal competent job of processing my refund. I've ordered a bunch of product from Amazon and have to say that such issues are unusual.
A week or so later, the medium size parka came in, and the fit was just right. I already have a down jacket which I love, but after trying just about every type of head and neck insulation, I just couldn't find a combination that was both warm and comfortable for extended stays in cold, windy conditions. The North Slope Down Parka is an amazingly warm and comfortable upgrade with the attached synthetic fur-ringed hood. It holds in body heat, and while only of medium weight (about 4 lbs), it has kept me warm on short duration excursions in temps into the 20's, with only a t-shirt underneath. For extended stays outside, in wind and even lower temps, I'll probably put on a fleece top, but it won't take much activity to get and stay warm with this jacket. One feature that is not apparent from the product descriptions or images are the knit cuffs about 3 - 4 inches up inside the sleeves that keep the the cold drafts out. None of my other cold weather jackets have this feature although it just makes so much sense. I was very pleasantly surprised to find this feature.
I had strongly considered a different brand which I have bought with success previously, but I'm a nature photographer and thus a pocket freak. One thing that the Eddie Bauer parka has is plenty of useful and accessible storage areas. To make things even better, I bought it when it was on sale, so I got a pretty good deal. If I could pick one nit, it would be that I would have preferred a more earth-toned color option, so that the inevitable dirt, bark, and leaf stains would be less apparent than on a black garment, but this is a minor issue. Overall, I am very pleased with this parka, and would freely recommend it to others.
Best Coat I own. December 9, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I live in Detroit MI, and I have two dogs with active bladders that have to go out a lot. All that said, this is a warm coat that is comfortable, and very warm, normally I walk out with only a light shirt underneath and I have no problems staying warm. For extended use, I normally pair this with the snow boots I also bought from Eddie Bauer and the flannel lined jeans, with a light sweater and I am good for 8+ hours on the coldest days.
