Product Description
An updated classic, now with a quilted Thinsulate lining for additional warmth and comfort. This is a superbly well-crafted leather coat, and it's a great choice for both the professional and casual parts of your week. Imported.

2 out of 5 stars Major shortcommings - not worth the price   November 13, 2008

First off, this jacket's manufacture is or reasonable quality, the stitching was of reasonable uniformity (though only single stitching in oppose to double stitching) and the cut appeared symmetrical. Aesthetically speaking it is designed well with two inner pockets and an inside button backing for each of the five front buttons, it also fit reasonable well despite being deigned for an American stomach.

The quality of the leather was a different story; despite a magnified picture of a sample jacket on their website showing a jacket of uniformly good quality leather, the jacket sent to me had large sections (approximately %20) of cow belly leather (this is the leather around the cows underside that must expand and contract to facilitate breathing, it generally has an ugly irregular texture and is much thinner and more delicate than leather from elsewhere. In addition to having an ugly texture, Belly leather has a tendency to stretch causing the jacket to become misshaped over time).

While the leather was of adequate thickness (an average of 2-3mm) the leather was extremely soft which does not lend itself well to wear and was closer in softness to a lady's fashion jacket or tie-able leather sash belt than a say a Harley biker jacket which you'd expect for something called a 'car coat'. Expect to throw it out in two years or less of regular use.

The interior lining is a non-removable polyester 'thinsulate' lining which added considerably to the bulk of this jacket, making it impractical to wear in anything more warmer than snow. Hence windy days, autumn or spring, or driving in a convertible car (the very purpose of a car coat) would regulate Eddie Bauer's car coat to the wardrobe.

FINAL VERDICT:
The unacceptable weakness and poor quality of the leather of this jacket and the non-removable bulky inner lining (ironically named thinsulate) render this jacket unusable for anything but the most sedate of activities, for example; sitting around the house if your heating has broken and only in Arctic conditions or practising your tough-guy look in the mirror. A car coat, as understood by generations of car drivers, it most certainly is not. A better description would be soft, bulky thigh-length jacket made of poor quality leather. It simply is not worth the extra money you would spend on it, compared to an off-the-rack equivalent at your local department store or leather shop for around $150 less.
